Chapter Summary

This bibliography contains list of reference articles and books that inquire into study of The Jeune École based on hitherto unexploited and unpublished primary sources from the Service Historique de la Marine. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order. France’s defeat in the war against the North German Confederation in 1871 eventually crushed France’s naval ambitions. The difficult period that followed, called for new ideas on how the Navy should organise itself. French naval thinkers had to consider what they could achieve in a position of inferiority, with the limited resources at hand. The recognition of the fact that France probably would remain inferior to Great Britain was a fundamental starting point for the new, radical ideas that have become known as the jeune école.

Keywords: Anglo-American dominance; French Navy; jeune école
