Chapter Summary

In the event of a dispute (contestation) as to the meaning or scope of a judgment any party both to the impeached judgment and to the dispute may make a request for the interpretation of that judgment on the basis of Article 60 of the Statute. Article 99 of the Rules provides that a request for the revision of a judgment shall be made by an application. As in the case of interpretation, it is immaterial whether the original proceedings were begun by an application or by the notification of a special agreement. In the United Nations and the International Court of Justice, the provisions of Article 96 of the Charter for the requesting organ supplemented by Article 65 of the Statute for the Court apply. The Statutes are silent about the composition of the bench in cases of interpretation and revision.
