Chapter Summary

This chapter focuses on the interface between the Biblical Creation account and Slavonic folk cosmogony, as mirrored in oral tradition. Exploring the encounter between the Holy Scriptures and ethnopoetics, it approaches phenomena of popular faith which exemplify correspondences between the written accounts of the Book of Genesis (both canonical and apocryphal versions), and their oral expression through the vernacular language(s). The chapter examines the relationship between Holy Writ and its oral counterparts (sheltered within folklore tradition of non-literate peasant communities in Eastern Europe), an approach that acknowledges the heterogeneity of cultural patterns constituting the confessional paradigm of Pax Slavia Christiana, and its ethnohermeneutics. Although recorded recently, the Slavonic creation stories reflect a centuries-old oral tradition. They either complement or act as alternatives to the Biblical text, either in its canonical or apocryphal versions. The chapter also embodies the encounter between the "Big Bang" and the Biblical account.
