Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the various possibilities of the effective implementation of religious rights from a Christian ethical perspective. It discusses the following questions: what should the Christian's attitude be towards other religions and the right of people of other religions to practice their religion unhindered; and what should be expected of government in this respect. As far as the implementation of the fundamental right of freedom of religion is concerned, Hildegard Warnink, in her recent evaluation of options for implementing religious rights, distinguishes between the active neutral option and the active plural option. According to the author, further ponderance over this issue opens doors for identifying another three options that function within the debates surrounding human rights: active state-religion option, active universalistic option, and active theocratic option. The chapter discusses the five options in detail by focussing on the meaning of each.

Keywords: active neutral option; active plural option; active state-religion option; active theocratic option; active universalistic option; Christian ethical perspective; human rights; religious freedom
