Chapter Summary

This index includes short definitions of the many Arabic terms used in the bookIslamic Piety in Medieval Syria Mosques, Cemeteries and Sermons under the Zangids and Ayyūbids (1146-1260), so it serves as a basic glossary as well. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order. The author concentrates on the arenas that stood at the heart of religious life, and were attended by all: common men and women, members of the ruling military and administrative elites, scholars and religious functionaries, merchants and farmers. Their gatherings in mosques, attendance at popular assemblies of exhortation, visits to cemeteries, and pilgrimages to sacred shrines are the subject of the chapters of the book.

Keywords: Ayyūbid rulers; Medieval Syria mosques; Zangids
