Chapter Summary

This chapter considers the path to integration for Muslims in Northern Ireland (NI), including the public process of integration, the perceptions of the wider society and of course the role of Muslims themselves in the integration process. It discusses an overview of what integration actually means. Integration: an absolute positive that will cure inter-group tensions and obliterate 'home-grown' terrorist threats, if only it could be achieved. The chapter discusses the underlying assumptions of the main models of integration to clarify exactly what integration means. It analyses the integration of Muslims in NI with the public process of integration. Publicly integrating Muslims in NI involves many facets, including the identity of the state, the public visibility of Muslims, legislation, consultation and interaction with Muslims and the role of the political establishment in NI. The divisions within NI have meant that integration policies have focused almost exclusively on Protestants and Catholics.
