Chapter Summary

This chapter summarizes some developments as they affect Maori culture in the broad sense. It presents a survey and commentary on Maori cultural heritage law and policy that will furnish a useful comparison concerning the cultural heritage of other indigenous peoples. New Zealand's current cultural patrimony law - the newly named Protected Objects Act 1975 (POA) - dates, in its present form, from 2006. The POA focuses on taonga Maori and other nationally significant cultural objects and regulates both their collection and sale together with the imposition of controls on their export from New Zealand. The principal New Zealand law dealing with graves is the Burial and Cremation Act 1964, which provides for the establishment, maintenance and regulation of cemeteries and crematoria. New Zealand has a large number of museums, many of which hold significant collections of taonga Maori.
