Chapter Summary

The Alans invariably occupy a key position in the complex, turbulent and sometimes obscure relations between the Khazars and their neighbours, not to mention many of the Khazar's political ventures. From the middle of seventh century the Alans found themselves in the sphere of interest of a new political entity, the Khazar Khaganate. By the middle of eighth century, the Alans were now virtually under Khazar rule and they go almost unmentioned in Byzantine sources of eighth and ninth centuries. This chapter focuses on the microzone which is situated in the region bordering on Khazaria but which gravitated towards Western Alania. This is the south-west border of the Khazar Khaganate. The chapter discusses the Alan settlements and the palaeo-landscape situation in this region.

Keywords: Alan settlements; Byzantine sources; Caucasus; Khazar Khaganate; Khazars; palaeo-landscape situation
