Chapter Summary

David the Invincible's Commentary on the Prior Analytics, which survives only in an Armenian translation from the Greek original, is a typical product of the sixth-century Alexandrian school of philosophy. It is composed according to certain rules established by earlier commentators of Aristotle and follows a widely accepted pattern which is referred to in a number of extant texts. The language of the Commentary, like that of the Armenian versions of David's other works, belongs to the so-called Hellenizing school (late 5th-early 8th centuries). According to Armenian tradition, the translator of David's Greek works was David himself, and that ancient belief has sometimes been doubted by modern scholars and sometimes accepted. In the case of Elias and David one might think of their teacher Olympiodorus, who must have lectured on the Prior Analytics and who may have written a commentary on the work.
