Chapter Summary

This section of the book presents supplements to Vigiliae Christianae. The book presents a study on the poetry and exegesis in premodern Latin Christianity. Poetry and exegesis combines two concepts that, strictly speaking, belong to different categories: poetry is a formal category, denoting all sorts of texts in verse, and exegesis has to do with content and can theoretically be expressed in any literary form. The Christian biblical commentary takes its origins from sermons of the Church fathers, rather than from the pagan classical commentary.
