Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the suffering of Frithiof Lennmalm's patients in his private practice. It demonstrates how patient records can be employed to shed light on the mental and social reality of 'nervous people', and on the actual use of particular medical concepts. The chapter gives an account of the principal reasons Lennmalm's patients became nervously ill. The patients often gave more than one reason for their nervousness (for example, 'alcoholism' and 'economic difficulties'). The chapter disentangles the causative factors only in order to give clarity to the author's exposition. In real life, very few patients either in Lennmalm's time or nowadays, attribute their suffering to only one source.
