Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book Jinn Eviction as a Discourse of Power: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Moroccan Magical Beliefs and Practices. It presents an overview of how the other chapters in the book are organized. The book explores the act of exorcism in many regions of Morocco. The term "jinn eviction" substitutes for "exorcism" to keep the study as closely attached as possible to the perspective of the local culture and try to avoid any projection of western values on it. The book presents a general history of maraboutism and local histories of saint Ben Yeffu. It deals with the Buffis' representation of the world of jinn and the practice of jinn eviction and other rituals at the shrine. The book explains the functioning of the edifice of authority at Ben Yeffu.

Keywords: Ben Yeffu; jinn eviction; maraboutism; Moroccan magical beliefs
