Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of terms and concepts relevant to the discussion on the African initiative and creativity, and the modern livelihood approach. This book highlights that the popularity of the 'sustainable livelihood approach' in development policy circles can in large part be explained by its focus on agency or "a pro-active self-help image [that contributes to] improving the lives of the poor". It shows how the livelihood approach, by putting more emphasis on the analysis of power relations, as is effectively done in gender studies, will enhance its sense of reality in Africa.
