Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book titled The Ancient Synagogue from its Origins to 200 C.E contains the table of contents and the foreword. The book had its beginnings in a multidisciplinary research project on ancient synagogues at Lund University in Sweden. Initiated and led by Birger Olsson, the project was conducted between 1997 and 2001. It resulted in the publication of several monographs and articles on the origin, nature, architecture, hermeneutics, and language of the synagogue, as well as analyses of the process of separation between Jews and Christians. The book represents the culmination of many years of work on ancient synagogues, and presents the reader the results of the common efforts.
