Chapter Summary

This section presents the list of chapters from Hebrew Bible and New Testament and the list of ancient sources that occur in the book titled The Ancient Synagogue from its Origins to 200 C.E. Ancient synagogues, the institutional matrixes in which two world religions were born, have been discussed and debated by scholars of Early Judaism and Christianity since modern historical research entered the world of academics around the 16th century. The Enlightenment, however, did not mark the beginning of learned interest in the early synagogue. As is evident in the works of Philo and Josephus, ideas and assumptions about the origin and nature of these institutions flourished already in the first century C.E.
