Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Religion and Society: An Agenda for the 21st Century contains the table of contents and a foreword. The book contains several articles on the history and condition of the study of religion in Japan. In March 2005, Tokyo was the scene of an exceptional gathering, of hundreds of people who had come from all parts of the world to attend the largest-ever Congress of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) for a whole week. The IAHR is a worldwide body that seeks to promote the activities of scholars contributing to the historical, social, and comparative study of religion. As such, the IAHR is the pre-eminent international forum for the critical, analytical and cross-cultural study of religion, in past and present.
