Chapter Summary

According to the Global Environment Facility, without stable and sustainable sources of financing, protected areas will deteriorate and the values they protect will not be maintained. In some regions, such as the European Community, financial assistance for environmental purposes and protected areas in particular, is linked through the overall governing mechanisms. With the Ramsar, all assistance is generated by voluntary contributions. It is typical of most international or regional regimes, that they have a Secretariat with a permanent base. The period between 2005 and 2014 has been designated as the United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. Within this rubric of overall education, the section of protected areas is particularly notable, as the majority of regimes have active programs designed to promote the values of such sites. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) have a very long standing in international environmental law, with regard to the creation and respect of protected areas.

Keywords: financial assistance; international regimes; non-governmental organisations (NGO); protected area; Standing Committees; voluntary contributions
