Chapter Summary

In the central region of the Eastern Cape Province rangelands play a vital role in sustaining rural livelihoods. Information for this chapter is drawn in part from doctoral fieldwork undertaken during 1998 and 1999 by Bennett and subsequent fieldwork in April, 2004. It begins with a historical overview of livestock (cattle, sheep and goats) numbers as well as current ownership patterns at the community level. The chapter describes current livestock production arrangements and husbandry practices and compares and contrasts these with what has already been documented for the region. It also describes the rangeland resources and outline livestock foraging patterns, including attention to the arable land allotments and their function in providing a forage reserve for livestock during the dry season. An overview of livestock ownership at the household level at Guquka and Koloni is available from socio-economic surveys by the agricultural and rural development research institute (ARDRI) during 1997.
