Chapter Summary

This chapter takes up the problem of defining precisely what a singular reading is. In practice, it is necessary to relativize the term to some definite body of available evidence. In order to facilitate such further checks, it proposes a method to collate initially using the apparatus of Tischendorf. It will then be possible to make further collations using just the resulting list. Instead of simply deleting readings that then find support, the chapter has noted them with asterisks. This procedure allows some control on the accuracy of the editions other than Tischendorf, since any conflicting evidence in them can be investigated further, and also permits the reader to follow all the steps after the first collation against Tischendorf. The chapter also talks about Greek support, versional and patristic support, hidden support, itacisms, corrections, dictation and physical aspects of copying.

Keywords: asterisked readings; dictation; itacisms; singular reading; Tischendorf
