Chapter Summary

Scattered in the landscape, Early Medieval rural settlements are difficult to identify. In rural settlements notions such as 'Early Middle Ages', 'Late Middle Ages', 'modern times' have a different meaning. The rural settlements of the early state period in Polish lands seen from the point of view of archaeological discoveries are mostly permanent settlement structures identified in the landscape. They appear singly or in clusters from several to more than a dozen. Many rural settlements of the early state period are datable broadly to within 2-3 centuries. The so-called service settlements make up a separate group. They should be treated both as a product of the appearance of early urban centers and as their service base. In Polish lands this type of settlement was, according to many authors, an 'imported' idea, the origins of which should be sought in the Carolingian world.
