Chapter Summary

This is the conclusion chapter of this book, which offers a complete description of parenthetical units in Biblical Hebrew, through integration of several research disciplines and scientific approaches. The fields of research consulted in the book include linguistics, discourse studies, text linguistics, textual philology, comparative Semitics, and literature. The review and analysis of the linguistic aspects of parenthesis have taught us that the identification and definition of the parenthetical unit are elusive from a linguistic viewpoint, and often more productive to pinpoint parenthesis by employing functional-pragmatic and literary perspectives, namely issues usually discussed in discourse studies or text linguistics, and up to a point in literary studies. The book aims to analyze parenthetical units by linguistic means.

Keywords: Biblical Hebrew; discourse studies; linguistics studies; parenthetical clauses; textual philology
