Chapter Summary

The international cooperative alliance (ICA) is an independent non-governmental organization (NGO) whose aim is to unite, represent, and serve cooperatives around the world. By 1922 the ICA had established committees on cooperative banking and insurance; these would eventually evolve into the first of nine sectoral organizations in the ICA family. Membership of the Alliance is open to organizations that meet the definition of a cooperative, conform to the ICA Statement on cooperative identity, and observe the aims of the ICA. The authorities of the ICA are the general assembly, the four regional assemblies, the board, the regional elected bodies, the audit and control committee, the president, and vice presidents. The primary source of income for the ICA is its members' annual subscriptions. Since its foundation in 1895, the ICA's core activities have revolved around the promotion and defence of the cooperative movement and the cooperative identity.
