Chapter Summary

Founded in 1952, the World Customs Organization (WCO) is the only global intergovernmental organization of its kind, whose objectives are exclusively related to customs matters. The WCO represents 174 customs administrations, whose accumulated trade figures accounted for 98 percent of the total global flow of trade in 2007. The Council is the governing body of the WCO and meets at least once a year in order to elect its Chairperson and the Vice-Chairs, and to determine the tasks to be assigned to the Permanent Technical Committee. The WCO has three primary sources of funding, which are the members' statutory contributions, mainly project-based voluntary contributions, and management fees for the implementation of projects. Th e WCO is the major actor in the field of customs. With the aim of developing secure and facilitative supply chains, the WCO promotes customs-to-customs networks and customs-to-business partnerships.
