Chapter Summary

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is the largest private philanthropic foundation in the world. The BMGF is a relatively new organization, founded in 2000 by merging the William H. Gates Foundation with the Gates Learning Foundation. The BMGF is organized in three major grant-making programmes namely the global development programme (GDP), the global health programme (GHP), and the U.S. programme (USP). As a private foundation, the BMGF does not raise funds from the public; its endowment is entirely made up of 'gifts' from Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett. The BMGF could also be described as a risk-taker and niche-investor. BMGF's rapid growth not only presents opportunities, but also challenge.

Keywords: Bill and Melinda Gates foundation (BMGF); financing; the global health programme (GHP)
