Chapter Summary

The Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc (ATSC) is an international non-profit organization whose aim is to develop voluntary standards for digital television technology. The ATSC was established in 1982 by the Joint Committee on Inter-Society Coordination (JCIC). Membership of the ATSC is open to any organization with an interest in digital television. The authorities of the ATSC are the Board of Directors and two main subcommittees namely the Planning Committee and the Technology and Standards Group. The primary source of income for the ATSC is the annual dues paid by its members. Members pay the annual dues in proportion to their annual gross revenues. The ATSC plays an important role in developing voluntary standards for digital television and in facilitating interoperability with other communications media.
