Chapter Summary

Development, production, and distribution of software and related services have become a major industry in the last decade, fueling the global economy and the knowledge-based society to a considerable degree. The Business Software Alliance (BSA) was established in 1988 as a private, nonprofit organization in response to the growing problems of property rights violations and software piracy. BSA Membership varies according to regional focus and activity scope. BSA offers several other membership categories that are limited in geographic scope and range of activity. BSA membership costs between USD 500 and 1000, depending on regional focus and activity scope. The main goal of the BSA is the protection of intellectual property rights and the prosecution of software piracy, but at the same time, it opposes rigid security regulations that impede business innovation and free trade.

Keywords: Business Software Alliance (BSA) membership; intellectual property; software piracy
