Chapter Summary

The International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO) is the intergovernmental organization that supervises the conduct of International Maritime Satellite Organisation, (INMARSAT) LLC. The IMSO remit is currently being extended to permit it on request to supervise the activities of any provider of satellite services including safety services or of long-range ship recognition services. Any state may become a member of IMSO. IMSO consists of an Assembly of Parties and a Directorate headed by a Director General. IMSO is financed by the INMARSAT Company in accordance with the Public Service Agreement. In the near future amendments to the IMSO Convention may come into force which will permit it to supervise not only INMARSAT but also the activities of other companies wishing to provide Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), and/or the mooted Long-Range Ship Identification services should such companies seek such supervision and 'quality control'.
