Chapter Summary

The Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) is an intergovernmental organization representing the rail mode. It has 43 member states in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, with their more than 240,000 km of railway networks. The first railways started operating at the beginning of the 19th century. One of the most important rights of the Member States is the right to participate in the creation and development of international systems of law concerning cross-border rail transport within the organs of OTIF. The running of OTIF is entrusted to the following organs namely the General Assembly, the Administrative Committee, the Revision Committee, the Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, the Rail Facilitation Committee, the Committee of Technical Experts, and the Secretary-General. The expenditure of OTIF is covered mainly by contributions from the member states.
