Chapter Summary

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization aimed at promoting the responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC's activities include the development of standards and trademark assurance. The FSC is a membership-based association. Individual members and delegates appointed by organizational members are eligible to become members of the Board of Directors. The General Assembly is the highest organ of the FSC. It comprises all individual members as well as representatives from all organizational members. The FSC may raise funds from six sources: evaluation fees; accreditation fees; membership dues; returns from investments; charges for FSC products and services; and grants and donations. The FSC belongs to the first generation of a new non-governmental type of transnational economic governance regime. The FSC has so far quite successfully managed to retain its prominent status in the realm of transnational forestry governance.
