Chapter Summary

Two intergovernmental energy organizations dominated the field in the 20th century - the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the International Energy Agency (IEA). In 1990, at the Second World Climate Conference in Geneva, a proposition emerged for the creation of a sustainable energy organization within the United Nations. Charged with the task to "accelerate and enlarge the worldwide contribution of clean, sustainable energy to economic and equitable social development", the International Sustainable Energy Organization (ISEO) seeks to aid countries in developing energy sources which do not harm the environment, health, or the climate. ISEO's organizational structure comprises a Board of Directors and Governors, an Executive Secretary, and Sector Coordinators. Global energy demand is increasing steadily and rapidly. Energy demand from non-OECD countries is projected to overtake energy consumption in the developed world between 2010 and 2015.
