Chapter Summary

Anti-Semitism in Alsace has in fact risen to the level of the political system in a way which is unique in France, with the two extreme right forces of the Front National (FN) and Alsace d'abord, and with a party of Muslims of France (PMF) whose electoral scores, derisory as they may be, remind us that it is to this day the only attempt to set up a Muslim political party in France. The Alsatian paradox is that this region constitutes an original laboratory for present-day anti-Semitism, as well as for an Islamophobia of which we have seen countless manifestations, while at the same time offering, in its institutional and cultural specificities, in particular the Concordat, opportunities which do not exist elsewhere for dealing with these same problems.

Keywords: Alsace; Alsace d'abord; Alsatian paradox; anti-Semitism; Concordat; Front National (FN); Islamophobia; party of Muslims of France (PMF)
