Chapter Summary

This Introductory chapter provides an overview of the chapter Anti-Semitism: A Question in Schools of the book The Lure of Anti-Semitism: Hatred of Jews in Present-Day France. In practice, anti-Semitism in schools takes four main forms. The first form involves attacks, the victims of which are Jewish pupils with elements of sadistic persecution. The second form is insults, which are an everyday occurrence in some establishment. The third form is the expression of prejudice and stereotypes in the classroom, in particular when the content of a lesson involves Jews. The fourth form is reactions of hatred or explicit hostility which may arise during a lesson, particularly in history and literature, in which the Shoah, World War II or else Israel are discussed, or else during events (the showing of films such as Nuit et Brouillard and Shoah).
