Chapter Summary

The Treaty concerning the Río de la Plata and its Maritime Front has been in force for more than three decades, a period that provides a variety of pertinent practice by the Parties and by the established Commissions, useful to evaluate the interpretation and application of its provisions. Any mention with reference to the economy of the Treaty comprises the initial positions of each negotiating State, the manner in which these positions are included in the Treaty and the extent to which they have been complied with in actual practice by the Administrative Commission of the Río de la Plata (CARP). The Treaty gives evidence of the intention of the Argentine Republic and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay to resolve, through direct negotiation, the issue of jurisdiction on the Río de la Plata, delayed for centuries and which was already dated by 1910.
