Chapter Summary

This chapter describes the inauguration ceremony of the new emperor Valentinian and his first speech to the soldiers. Valentinian acted swiftly by giving the ringleaders a good dressing-down and then delivering his speech, in which he agreed to the need for a partner, making it perfectly clear, however, that he reserved the choice of this person for himself. Valentinian won the day with his authoritative demeanour and all protests stopped. The official hailing of Valentinian as the new emperor was accompanied by the praises which the ?attractiveness of a new situation' provoked.
