Chapter Summary

The earliest biographical sketch of Xu Yisun, Chen Jiru's partner in robe-burning and tutoring, is found in the Yunjian jumuchao published around 1593. A biography of Xu in the Outline Gazetteer of Yunjian, edited by Chen's erstwhile teacher, He Sanwei, provides some detailed information on the circles that Xu moved in. Xu and Chen were both from Huating, they knew the same people, they both burnt their robes, and for a time they lived together. The absence of information on Xu Yisun in biographical material on Chen is complicated by the information available on a figure called Xu Zefu. The information on the two figures is sufficient to note similarities between them, but insufficient to state with any certainty whether they are related, the same figure, or two unrelated figures.
