Chapter Summary

This chapter in German with a brief English summary deals with the formative years of Bernhard Varenius. Varenius attended school at a time when the traditional scholarly disciplines were entering a new phase and still had to establish legitimate positions. Although he was trained in comprehending what classical authors had written, Varenius soon progressed to systematising knowledge himself. Without using logical reasoning and filing his notes in slip boxes (Joachim Jungius' practice must have been his model), it would have been impossible for him to have arranged his huge number of excerpts in such a short time; in Geographia Generalis Varenius made use of this technique. Göllnitz was consulted, and Varenius had been familiar with Clüver's book as a standard textbook since his studies at Helmstedt University. Thus we can say that Varenius' attraction to geography owes something to the example of his teachers' scientific interests.
