Chapter Summary

This book collects contributions on Bernhard Varenius which attempt to reconsider his place in the history of scientific thought within the context of his age, the early seventeenth century, and after. In the first part of this collection the focus is on biographical studies along with Varenius' education and family history as well as the theological framework in the era of confessional disputes. Varenius' description of Japan is discussed in the second part of the book. The third part is devoted to Varenius' main work, Geographia Generalis of 1650 and its legacy. The final articles deal with how the Geographia Generalis was distributed and how it spread.
