Chapter Summary

In order to understand the "virgin birth" motif in the Apocalypse of Adam (ApocAd), many reflections inevitably suggest themselves. The ideas contained in ApocAd are probably old enough to testify to conceptions already circulating in "esoteric" or apocalyptic groupings in the earliest Christian times, including virgin birth predicated of a Saviour-figure essentially modelled on the Saošyant and partially on the Messiah. A wider background to the virgin-birth-motif has been overlooked when trying to understand its meaning, but is brought out clearly by the Apocalypse's diversity of stories. In the Gospel the feature of virgin-birth remains an element belonging to a special framework of ideas. That conclusion is reinforced by the fact that not only individual stories or motifs have influenced Matthew's stories, but a connected cycle of stories linked in close association and referring to virgin-birth, have been independently documented together in ApocAd (Kingdoms 1-4).

Keywords:Apocalypse of Adam (ApocAd); earliest Christian times; Matthew's stories; Messiah; Saošyant; virgin birth
