Chapter Summary

This chapter looks at the history and development of the ways in which the people of Essex and East London have, at all levels, commemorated those who served and died in the First World War. There are religious, political, patriotic, nationalistic and emotional elements, to varying degrees, in the memorials and associated aspects. In many ways, war memorials can be all things to all people. The key terms, which feature throughout the chapter, are heavily interconnected. These are: memory, memorial, commemoration and remembrance. Commemoration of a military fashion is an interesting concept. Often it results in some form of status aggrandisement of the individual concerned. Communities and families built their own memorials to commemorate their own dead. Relationships within and between families and communities that had been disrupted by the war could be patched up to a certain degree by the community activity that was commissioning a war memorial.
