Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the results of desk-based and field-based research into the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit (NOFU) during World War II (WWII). Much of this work related to a larger project exploring all the archaeological sites within Strathmashie Forest and the potential for including these in a heritage trail. The work, social life and contribution to the war effort of the NOFU are examined in the chapter, placing particular emphasis on Scotland, where the vast majority of Newfoundland units were based. The recently executed historical research along with archaeological survey and excavation of NOFU remains in Strathmashie Forest, Highland is detailed and used as an example of NOFU activity. Two phases of work were carried out in Strathmashie Forest in 2005. Initially, a walkover and topographic survey was undertaken within Strathmashie Forest as a whole, which included desk-based research. Subsequently, trial trenches were excavated over potential NOFU sites.
