Chapter Summary

This chapter deals with the various articles of the Agreement for Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 16th session. The interchange of cultural property among nations for scientific, cultural and educational purposes increases the knowledge of the civilization of Man, enriches the cultural life of all peoples, and inspires mutual respect and appreciation among nations. Cultural property constitutes one of the basic elements of civilization and national culture, and its true value can be appreciated only in relation to the fullest possible information regarding is origin, history and traditional setting. The protection of cultural heritage can be effective only if both nationally and internationally States work in close cooperation.
