Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a recommendation concerning the protection, at national level, of the cultural heritage, adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), meeting in Paris from October-November 1972. The cultural and natural heritage represents wealth, the protection, conservation and presentation of which impose responsibilities on the States in whose territory it is situated, both vis-à-vis their own nationals and vis-à-vis the international community as a whole. The specialized services should work with bodies of experts responsible for giving advice on the preparation of measures relating to the cultural and natural heritage. Such bodies should include experts, representatives of the major preservation societies, and representatives of the administrations concerned. Each Member State should draw up an inventory for the protection of its cultural and natural heritage, including items which are inseparable from their environment and contribute to its character.
