Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a recommendation concerning the education for International Understanding, Cooperation and Peace and education relating to Human Rights and fundamental freedoms, adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), meeting in Paris, on 19 November 1974. Education should be infused with the aims and purposes set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, the Constitution of UNESCO and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Member States should promote, at various stages and in various types of education, study of different cultures, their reciprocal influences, their perspectives and ways of life, in order to encourage mutual appreciation of the differences between them. Increased efforts should be made to develop and infuse an international and intercultural dimension at all stages and in all forms of education. Member States should consider international cooperation a responsibility in developing international education.
