Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a recommendation concerning the international exchange of cultural property, adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) meeting in Nairobi, held on 26 November 1976. In giving effect to the present Recommendation, Member States which have a federal or non-unitary constitutional system might follow the principles set forth in Article 34 of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by the General Conference at its seventeenth session. The development of international exchanges should enable the cultural institutions of the different Member States to enlarge their collections by acquiring cultural property of lawful origin, accompanied by documentation calculated to bring out their full cultural significance.
