Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a recommendation concerning the safeguarding and contemporary role of historic areas adopted by the General Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), meeting in Nairobi, held on 26 November 1976. Member States should bring this Recommendation to the attention of the national, regional and local authorities and of institutions, services, or bodies and associations concerned with the safeguarding of historic areas and their environment. The application of an overall policy for safeguarding historic areas and their surroundings should be based on principles which are valid for the whole of each country. Member States should adapt the existing provisions, or, where necessary, enact new laws and regulations, so as to secure the protection of historic areas and their surroundings.
