Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the revised recommendation concerning the international standardization of educational statistics adopted by the General Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), meeting in Paris, held on 27 November 1978. Member States should bring the present revised Recommendation to the knowledge of authorities and organizations concerned with the compilation and reporting of educational statistics. The educational attainment of a person is the highest grade completed and/or the highest level of education attained or completed by the person in the system of regular, special and adult education of his own or some other State. Education should be classified into the following major sectors: (a) regular education, and (b) adult education. Education should be classified as far as possible by the level-categories and fields of study of the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED).
