Chapter Summary

The development of international rules is one of the main functions of UNESCO. This chapter is a part of the first part of this volume on UNESCO. Standard-setting represents one of the main constitutional functions of UNESCO and an important tool for realizing the goals for which the organization was created. This chapter presents the various articles included in the International Convention for the Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organizations. This Convention was adopted by the Diplomatic Conference on the International Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms, and Broadcasting Organizations, convened by ILO, UNESCO and the International Union for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. The Contracting States, moved by the desire to protect the rights of performers, producers of phonograms, and broadcasting organizations, signed this agreement on 26 October 1961.
