Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the recommendation concerning the status of the artist, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO. Member States should bring this Recommendation to the attention of authorities, institutions and organizations in a position to contribute to the improvement of the status of the artist and to foster the participation of artists in cultural life and development. Member States should encourage all activities designed to highlight the action of artists for cultural development, including in particular activities carried out by the mass media and the educational system, and for the employment of leisure for cultural purposes. Member States should promote and protect the status of artists by considering artistic activity, including innovation and research, as a service to the community. The development of international rules is one of the main functions of UNESCO. The original text of the chapter is in French.
