Chapter Summary

This chapter talks about the European Convention for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment signed by States Members of the Council of Europe, at Strasbourg, on 26 November 1987. It describes 23 articles agreed by the member States of the Council of Europe. The member States of the Council of Europe agreed upon the articles by recalling that, under Article 3 of the same Convention, "no one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment", and by noting that the machinery provided for in that Convention operates in relation to persons who allege that they are victims of violations of Article 3.
