Chapter Summary

This chapter talks about the protocol additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the protection of victims of non-international armed conflicts. The protocol is adopted by the diplomatic conference on the reaffirmation and development of International Humanitarian Law applicable in armed conflicts, at Geneva, on 8 June 1977. The chapter also describes 28 articles agreed by the High Contracting Parties. The High Contracting Parties agreed upon the articles by recalling that the humanitarian principles enshrined in Article 3 common to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, constitute the foundation of respect for the human person in cases of armed conflict not of an international character, and by emphasizing the need to ensure a better protection for the victims of those armed conflicts.
